Oil Leak, Potential
I was stopped at a light tonight to find myself in a puddle of oil. I think, "can't be from my baby", I keep riding to my house about 1 mile and in my driveway oil is gushing like a stuck pig from my
drive train! After removing the outside cover I found that the rubber washer that holds the oil from leaking around the shifter does not have a washer holding the bottom side intact (the bottom of the rubber washer was sticking out). I remedied it by placing a 9/16 washer around it and cinching it back down. I lost 1 quart of oil, if I was on the road, it would have meant a new engine.
Hope you all take a look at this, could be fatal!

Have you had the air cleaner off the bike lately?? many posts here about the crankcase vent line being pinched behind the air box. Something pushed that seal out.

I'd check this out, as I've said before I believe this seal is meant to blow if the crank case can't vent, if you make it so this can't vent ether then something else will blow. I think you're asking for trouble. If you take your air cover off you'll find towards the bottom a vent tube that sticks out. Find a rubber hose that will fit over it, loosen your oil filler plug and see if you can blow air. If not the vent hose is pinched and this is what caused it to blow that seal.

I will check that today, because I took it all off to reroute the throttle cable lines last week. It still puzzles me as to why they would not design the rubber bushing with a solid washer around it. I think it's a drastic way to deal with a pinched
crankcase breather problem. Thanks for you help.

Look at it this way, if the crank case wasn't able to vent wouldn't you, if you were the designer design in a weak point that would not blow out a more critical area? Like I said, this happened to me, I was about 10 miles from home with no way to trailer it home so I went for it. When I got home no more oil was leaking from the bike (until I put it on the side stand). So all the oil that was going to come out had. There was still about 2.5 quarts of oil. So it wasn't dry by any means. After finding out where the oil was coming from and what caused it I concluded that this was designed to blow so that if the engine for what ever reason lost the ability to vent it would blow here thus warning the owner there is a problem (oil coming out of my engine, oh crap!!) but not so bad that you can’t get the bike home. Just my opinion here, but from the evidence I think a sound one.

Thanks Bruce, Thanks Silvervtxo4, you guys were dead on. I had a crimp in the crankcase breather line which I straightened out. Wow did it put a scare into me. No problems riding today.

Here is another way to check it.
I do this every time I get my X back from the stealer
If the air box is ever removed by you or the stealer, there is a possibility the breather hose for the
crankcase could get pinched.If it is pinched, pressure will build up in the crankcase and blow the seal out around the shifter lever.
If this seal is ever blown out, you can put it back in with a hammer and a wide blade screwdriver.
A simple way to check is:
Take the air cleaner cover off.
Take the dipstick out and lay a 3x3" single layer of tissue paper over the opening.
Take a common drinking straw and hold it over the smaller hole in the airbox, (the one that sticks out), and give it a puff of air. If it blows the tissue off, you’re OK. If not, the hose is pinched behind the airbox.
